What is the difference between UNC and UNF threads?

UNC (Unified National Coarse) has fewer threads per inch and is the standard for general assembly — it's faster to install and more tolerant of damage. UNF (Unified National Fine) has more TPI, providing higher tensile strength per diameter, better vibration resistance, and finer adjustment. Use UNF for aerospace, precision instruments, and thin-walled parts.

Can I interchange metric and unified threads?

Accepted Answer

No. Although some sizes appear similar (e.g., M8×1.25 and 5/16-18 UNC have close major diameters), the pitch/TPI values differ, making them incompatible. Cross-threading metric into unified (or vice versa) will damage both parts. Always verify the thread standard before assembly. The only exception is some pipe threads where adapters exist.
