Does my CAM software automatically compensate for chip thinning?

Some modern CAM systems (e.g., Mastercam Dynamic Motion, Fusion 360 Adaptive Clearing, hyperMILL MAXX) include automatic chip thinning compensation when using their HSM toolpaths. However, many standard toolpaths do not. Check your CAM software's documentation. If not supported, manually increase the programmed feed per tooth by the thinning factor calculated from your radial engagement.

Should I always compensate for chip thinning?

Compensate when ae < 50% of cutter diameter (thinning factor > 1.0). Below 25% engagement, compensation becomes essential — the factor exceeds 1.15 and uncorrected feeds cause significant rubbing. However, be cautious: very high compensated feeds can cause problems on tool entry, corners, or when radial engagement suddenly increases. Many machinists cap compensation at 2× the nominal feed.
